Finnish Hotel of Tomorrow FHOT 2.0

In the coming years, companies within tourism, accommodation, and construction sectors will be required to report on their environmental processes and sustainability efforts, calculate their carbon footprint, and shape their business results according to directives. In the tourism and accommodation sector, this entails increasing collaboration with construction industry stakeholders, when new destinations are built or renovated.

Simultaneously, both the construction and tourism industries are suffering from weakened conditions and poor demand, especially in the capital region. Accommodation companies should invest in smart, eco-efficient properties that meet the quality standards of international travel agencies' environmental standards.

Tourist destinations and accommodation facilities inherently seek to enrich the customer experience by leveraging service technologies to streamline the travel chain from home to the destination and within the accommodation itself. Construction, design, and interior design consultancy firms, on the other hand, aim to visualize and simulate new construction and renovation projects, integrating them into physical-digital customer journeys and service environments.

The goal of the joint FHOT 2.0 project between Haaga-Helia and Metropolia is to:

  • Develop and innovate intelligent solutions and services
  • Implement accommodation and service experiments with tourism and construction companies
  • Identify and innovate tourist needs and expectations
  • Support the development of SMEs with solutions for accommodation, construction, and related industries

A key challenge of the project is to integrate service and construction technologies together with environmental, business, and customer requirements for both tourism and accommodation companies as well as construction industry stakeholders. The service experiments:

  1. Create simulated, multisensory accommodation and service spaces, microenvironments for companies to use
  2. Build researched accommodation spaces that prioritize eco-efficiency and environmental requirements in their design,
  3. Form accommodation solutions that utilize service and eco-design in their interior design.

The results of the accommodation and service experiments carried out during the project will be widely reported to support the development of participating companies as well as the progress of both industries more broadly. The experiments are carried out with scalability and usability in mind, considering both the customer experience and the perspective of maintaining and owning the actual business.
