MAKU – A Multisensory approach to Language Learning

The social integration of migrants and their access to the labour market require learning the local language. The MAKU project develops innovative solutions to promote language learning in and for the workplace.

The target group of the MAKU project are immigrants outside the working life in the Uusimaa region who need fast and supported Finnish language learning in order to enter working life or vocational training. The main objective is rapid acquisition of the working language. In addition to immigrants, the project's target group includes companies and employers in the region, in particular those responsible for recruitment and induction and managers who have an impact on working practices.

The aim is to develop new training solutions for language learning. The project will test, research and develop different approaches to language learning for working life in a new 4L-Living Lab (Language Learning Living Lab). The Living Lab will introduce multi-sensory methods, the use of VR and XR technology, language socialisation and multilingual and multi-channel communication to promote professional language learning.

The project partners are Laurea UAS, Haaga-Helia UAS, Arffman Oy and Lingsoft Oy. Haaga-Helia is responsible for work package 3: The Box - Using a digital virtual learning and simulation environment.
